A nice simple egg salad lunch

It started out as a ‘what have we got left’ type of lunch and turned into a delicious, colourful and very satisfying lunch for two.

Leftover ingredients:

5 hard boiled eggs (originally destined for sandwiches but ran out of bread)
Part of an iceberg lettuce (great for chopping up)
1/2 a carrot (thinly sliced)
Red cabbage leftovers (raw and sliced)
The bottom of a jar of mayonnaise that needed using up due to date
A sprinkle of smoked paprika (store cupboard staple)

Method: slice eggs, arrange chopped salad and eggs on plate. Put mayonnaise wherever you see fit and sprinkle generously with smoked paprika.

Sit down and enjoy at your leisure.

And we did.  The plates got cleared and our tummies were very satisfied.

What a work of art!

Note to self: need to restock on eggs, mayo and salad ingredients.

Excited to say I’ve just joined The Knitting Network

It’s simply years since I got my needles out and did some serious knitting.  I’ve just joined The Knitting Network which has renewed my passion.

Perhaps today’s weather doesn’t suit wrestling with wool but pretty soon the nights will start to draw in and I’ll be glad of the activity.

I’ve signed up so that if someone clicks to the Knitting Network site via the knitting network SHOP NOW banner I get the kudos and hopefully buys something then I get a small commission as well.

So – if you’re a closet (or very open) knitter and crafter then you might find some goodies to excite you as well.

Who is craving a return to sun with a holiday in Spain

The answer to that is probably ‘ WE ARE’.  Gosh, you don’t realise what you are missing until you can’t do it any more do you?
Although it’s no consolation really we have to make do with watching programmes on the TV showing glorious sunshine, beaches, airports and travel programmes.  It seems cruel at times to watch people such as our lovely Jane McDonald cruising the Med when it is MOST def NOT going to happen until well into next year.
So … to whet you appetite for you holiday in the sun I’m sharing a photo of a lovely bright shiney jet winging it’s way to somewhere marvellous I’m sure.

Ahhhhh …. those were the days.

So this year we will probably be taking our Holiday at Pontins

Anyone coming with us? We have a feeling it will be lovely.

Lockdown Survival Guide 2020

I don’t know about you but I think it’s been a tough 12 weeks hasn’t it? LOCKDOWN IS PAINFUL

One thing that got me through so far has been my fridge poster (hand-written … nothing posh or impressive) that reminded me daily of a few things I thought I needed to do to keep myself going OK.

There is no way I can claim I came up with it or put a copyright to it.  I read it on one of those many millions of social media posts that came before my eyes. If you recognise it and want me to add credit please let me know. Thanks – Julie

In a Day – Do What Works For YOU

Ask YOURSELF these questions – gently – no bullying of self

  1. Who have I contacted to give love and support?
  2. How have I kept my mind calm?
  3. What did I do to get some fresh air?
  4. How did I move my body to get / keep fit?
  5. What did I do to progress my work / life / future?
  6. What did I eat for optimal good health?
  7. What did I do to be creative / express myself?

And that’s it. Quite simple but effective.

Speaking of which I’ve done all on the checklist except plan a good meal for this evening.  Hope everyone is keeping safe and keeping well.

You might think the fear of dying would give impetus to life …..

…. well, that’s what I thought before experiencing the current world health crisis.  We’re living through a global pandemic. A threat to human life on a scale no one seems to have witnessed before called Coronavirus COVID-19 which has resulted in a world wide LOCKDOWN

I read newsfeeds on social media and e-magazine articles commenting that basically people just do not know how to handle it – and overall it’s accepted that this is OK because non of us have gone through anything comparable to this before.  Posts and blogs seem to have taken 2 distinct paths overall – firstly, those that are action based and promote a ‘now is the time’ to do all those things you’ve been putting off – such as learn a language, bake cakes, clear out the clutter, sort the garden, start an online business etc etc and the second path is a more spiritual ‘accept the gift‘ and find peace in your life. Learn to meditate, breathe and pray.

If you’re anything like me you may find yourself alternating between the two many times at different times all in the same day and being filled with thoughts, emotions, physical reactions and more besides that I find words can’t describe. At time in total paralysis and other times can’t keep still and full of activity.

You might have thought that having a blog named a Day Well Lived might give me some focus.  This website has been on and off for a couple of years if I’m truthful and I’ve struggled to know how to use it.  One of the first uses for it seemed trivial at the time. Talking about the little things in life that give comfort and happiness such as a walk in the park, holding the hand of a loved one, a hug from a friend and sharing a coffee at the local coffee shop.  When I first wrote those things I felt embarassed because they weren’t ground breaking examples of building a great career, experiences of a life time or coming up with anything astoundingly original, philosphical or groundbreaking.

How ironic (if that is the correct use of the term) that those very posts now (if I had kept them) would list the most precious things in the world to most of us now.  Things that I would think most people would hope we will all get the chance to experience again in the not too distanct future.

I wonder if we will remember how wonderous the small stuff really is when life ‘returns to normal’?

Making a Vision Board 5 Easy Steps

How do you Make Vision Boards? Making a vision board is easy and can be achieved with very little resources and minimal effort.

Vision boards when done in an easy no stress way are far more effective in fact than those that are completed under pressure. They have the ability to tap into your deep subconcious desires by taking this relaxed approach.

Vision board are for you to create a space for you to identify and remind yourself what really matters in your life.

So if you’re ready – let’s go …

You will need:

* A large piece of paper or notice board
* Something to attach cuttings to your paper or board (glue or pins)
* A selection of magazines, leaflets, brochures or printouts to use for ideas
* Scissors
* Time for yourself

What to do:

1. Pick your time and set the mood. Do what works for you. The whole thing does not need to be done in one go. You can split your time up into blocks – perhaps 15 to 20 minutes to go through source material. Tear out photos, articles, words and colours that instinctively appeal to YOU. No thought of what someone else might think. This is ABOUT YOU

2. The next block of time is to cut up the photos and articles. Take about 10 to 15 minutes. Trim them to shapes that please you. Not everything needs to be how it was presented to you. A square picture can be made round, oval, heart shaped or cut to your own style. Look for letters and words that mean something to you. These can be cut from whole sentences to suit YOU.

3. The last block of time is taken to arrange the cuttings on your paper or board. You don’t need to use ALL your cuttings. Be as creative or as orderly and structured as YOU choose to be. There’s no right or wrong in this activity.

4. When you are happy with your creation glue or pin the cuttings in place.

5. Finally, have a think about what your board is telling you about you, your life, your ambitions and dreams. Make a note of these things, either in a diary, a mental note or on your phone.

Take a step back, SMILE and GIVE A DEEP SIGH OF RELIEF

The next step will be to plan what actions to take to achieve your dreams and goals.

What do you think the future of the NHS will look like?

I was asked to write a final piece of work about my vision for the NHS in 70 years. This was for my online course entitled the NHS Explained: How the Health System in England Really Works run by the Kings Fund.

What the NHS could look like in 70 years’ time. Whow – that takes a long leap into the future, especially when you consider the advances over the past 70 years.  I will give it a go though. In fact projecting myself 70 years forward has proved to be quite an entertaining, exciting and at times a somewhat frightening experience.

My professional life is spent ‘online’ developing websites; using available programmes and online systems to aid users find products and use information that is useful for them.  Developing this thought and work further would mean that I might need to take a paradigm shift into the world of AI (Artificial Intelligence). Not as fanciful as you might imagine. Only this morning [Sunday 30 June 2019] on the BBC Andrew Marr show foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt MP, said that in his opinion the future of the UK is technology based and all that that encompasses, including the development and use of nano technology and artificial intelligence. He pointed out that we (the UK) have the top universities that develop technology in Europe and are at the top of the world league tables also.

The smart home already exists and when we can we as consumers seem quite happy to pay for the services that are provided making use of our ‘personal home assistants’ to organise our lives. So, it’s not a far leap to take this to the area of looking after our healthcare.  People would probably be expected to take personal responsibility for their own health with the assistance of various continual monitoring systems such as health bands, smart watches and smart homes with integrated scanners and implants.  If I understand it correctly the soon to be used 5g technology will change the face of wireless communications completely by using existing wiring and electrical systems as conduits for information.  We could therefore be ‘monitored’ in every way possible.

I can see a time when the NHS would be a UK wide centralised ‘business’ where most services and  specialist consultants would be available online with full access to patients data, with the patients consent of course. This system already exists to some extent and is used daily by many of the UK population, whereby they have full access to their own medical records, book in to see the doctor of their choice and self refer to various departments within the NHS for help with sorting health issues.

This is where my vivid imagination ran away with me where the ‘house’ – which now monitors everything – would perhaps decide that a person’s medication wasn’t having the desired outcome, so would take it upon itself to order a different type. This medication would be delivered on the same day of course by some kind of mini-drone or an automated truck.

However, even that is probably an outdated idea even as I type.  Who knows what will still be here with regards to NHS health systems in 70 years – especially if AI has a hand in it.
